Michele de Lucchi, his clients, my conclusions
Writing this post again because of my terrible carelessness, unlucky me.
It was the 13 of October when I’ve attended the lecture by Michele de Lucchi. The lecture took place in Crocus Expo under the auspices of Moscow Design week 2011.
It was the 13 of October when I’ve attended the lecture by Michele de Lucchi. The lecture took place in Crocus Expo under the auspices of Moscow Design week 2011.
Michele de Lucchi (1951) - architect - designer. Born in Ferrara, Michele De Lucchi studied in Padova and in Firenze (Florence), Italy, where he graduated in architecture in 1975. His approach to the creation of new styles in designplayed an important role in the movementsCavart, Alchymia, and Memphis.Michele De Lucchi's creative professional activity is based on the conceptual exploration of architecture, design, technology and crafts.
He designs buildings, exhibitions, installations for indoor spaces, and industrial design products. In 1990 he founded Produzione Privata, a small-scale company concern through which Michele De Lucchi designs products that are made using artisan techniques and crafts. Since 2004 he has sculpturing little wooden houses with the chain saw to create the essentiality of the architectural style.
The ability
to attend this lecture was great for me; not only because of the message of Mr.
de Lucchi but because of the opportunity to see in real the designer who has
such a great experience. Moreover, he is a designer of the “older generation”
and it was interesting to compare his points of view with points of view of
younger designers.
Briefly
about the lecture, Michele de Lucchi told about his favorite and terrible clients.
By the word “clients” he means: industry and freedom, experiments and crafting,
style and technology, size and proportions, light and shadows, etc. He said: “my
favorite client is the Mr. Light, and he gives me an inspiration…” and the
whole lecture was structured by telling about important points in design by
calling them “clients” and spiritualizing them.
Generally, all this “clients” and information about them was quite common information. Michele also told a bit about his biography (also well-known facts) showed some pictures of his studio and working process.

Well, for
me personally it would be much better to hear a bit less prepared lecture
because it was quite difficult to recognize really important points from this monolog.
But I believe that people who know less about Mr. de Lucchi and the design
process get a lot of important stuff.
Anyway, I
tried to single out the most important, for me, points of the lecture.
Mr. de
Lucchi said that he draws lamps when he bored; sometimes he draws about 100
sketches a day (haha, he should be really bored these days :)) That was astonishing for me and then I realized that if I would
try to make that much sketches a day one day the brilliant idea should come.
He has a twin brother, did you know? I didn't. Michelle said that it is really important for him to be unique, to be Michelle, not one of twins. Well, he actually noticed that if you want to be a desiger you schould be unique and make differences, that's obvious.

Some of his
phrases I’ve treated as important:
- “We are the clients of ourselves, we should recognize who we are and what do we want...”
- “Being free meant the process of searching something inside ourselves, something that could make the world better…”
- “The space costs a lot; we should lead it to act like we want…”
- “We should clearly understand who our most important clients are…”
- “We should give our clients more than they want…” (Clients here - people)
- “The designer should be a businessman; he should understand the whole process: industry, production, trading…”
