How to get out of creative crisis
For a parallel module, I read a book by Robert McKee "Story, Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting." This work is not quite along our profile, but during the reading, I compared the techniques and processes that use scriptwriters and writers with techniques used in the design process. I would like to share with you one of the conclusions, which had previously been familiar to me, but at the moment got a logical conclusion.
Creative crisis. Inability to create something or to come up with. This is not the loss of talent and please do not doubt in your competency. When you had an inspiration, the work was boiling and the result was positive and continued to develop. So this is not the case. The crisis is a temporary phenomenon, which, unfortunately, happens to all creative professionals. Yes, in this context, I refer to the Product Design as a totally creative activity, in part because of the similarity of the causes and characteristics of this crisis. It is necessary to reinforce and stimulate the talent with ideas, with already existing designs and any possible forms of art, whether it’s paintings, movies or a book. Constant research in all sorts of areas, “recharges” the imagination and quite often it’s the door that leads out of a creative crisis. Explore yourself in this research, draw analogies and make your conclusions how you reflect in these findings. After a turning point, deep in the findings and the search for causal relations, you'll want apply your the emotions somewhere. Write down what you think on every issue, as you see yourself or don’t in these parts of arts or design. Afterwards, you will want to throw these thoughts into a form, that feels more acceptable at the moment, make sketches (good or bad),writings, try to transfer your thoughts and findings into something tangible.Let it be a poem or a painting, it does not matter. Talent is impossible to lose, it wakes up through these investigations and later at some point, it is likely to be reincarnated, and refer you to the desired design. That, by the way, thanks to these explorations of yourself, as the Rams stated, the product will be more a honest than the hard-won one, because you had to invent it. But there are important aspect in this approach to finish the crisis that can bring the creation of the product to dead end. Research and exploration of yourself in it should not be overextended in time, you must force yourself to simultaneously think of relations of search inferences and investigations to practical application in design. And even if you can not use what you have discovered in the current project, the acquired knowledge will move to the piggy bank for the future. Research is a kind of material for creativity, food for the imagination, which helps to ginger up the designer. The creation should be done together with the research. This allows upon the emergence of new inputs, questions, and specialities requiring examination in the course of development to complement the product and in most cases will lead you to a holistic, complete outcome.
